Vernal Deep Map

Vernal Deep Map

In Utah, Vernal's downtown is a space of connections, connecting people and resources to other external places. Its main utility has historically been a medium between destinations. Whether it's the oil and mining business driving users down Main Street by method of large tanker trucks, or tourists who use Vernal as a civic node to local monuments and outdoors spaces.

The Vernal Deep Map highlights the most experiential aspects of Main Street. First and foremost, Vernal's character of connection has transformed Main Street into a loud, fast-paced, and busy network of cars. Walking as a pedestrian down Main Street can be jarring and disorienting by the sheer noise produced from the street. This is highlighted in the relief in the center of the piece, showcasing where sound protrudes from the street to the nearby environment, bouncing off of building walls.

Also typified in the Deep Map is a warped grid. Its irregular structure derives from pedestrian presence, which is almost entirely compressed around two or three blocks in downtown. As the warped grid begins to crumble, pedestrians become more apparent in that part of town. The grid's second use is to show zoning, in three segments; Commercial Row, Commercial, and Residential. The commercial row zoning district is the most opaque segment of the deep map. Finally, expressed in strings is the network of nearby civic and institutional buildings. As the acrylic bands find large nodes, there is indicated a civic building.
